Sleep Training

Sleep Consultations

We all  forget we were taught in those early days, months, and years of life, to settle ourselves into sleep. Some of us found it easier than others, some were well, but some had health issues, such as prematurity or reflux that made settling into sleep difficult, but eventually we learnt the skill. As adults, most of us settle into sleep at night in our own unique way night after night.  🌸

At Sarah Teague Baby Care, I strive to look at your child holistically, at their physical being, and how they are medically, emotionally, developmentally, and your family and your environment.  🌸

One size does not fit all!

I offer some free sleep and bedtime advice leaflets and links to government advice below. Please feel free to download, print and share. Sometimes, just small bedtime adjustments are required and you may not need my help, services or costs.  🌸

About Our Sleep Training Progammes
🌸

All of our sleep programmes look at the whole of the child and their home and family. I look at what is going on in their life, what is important to them and what they are struggling with. Part of my assessment is a comprehensive assessment that is completed with the parent/s/carer.

It really is a truly individual sleep plan for that individual child. Also, please remember      because of my background as a health visitor I have a wide range of knowledge regarding childrens health and wellbeing, so rather than refer you back to your health visiting team and you waiting for their care, it is often something I can support you with.

Safe Sleep.

Always follow The Lullaby Trusts Safe Sleep Guidelines.

Following this advice for every sleep, day and night, reduces the risk o sudden infant death syndrome, (SIDS), previously known as cot death. The Lullaby Trust "safer sleep advice" has saved the lives of over 31,951 babies since 1991. 🌸

The safest place for a baby to sleep is in their own clear, flat, firm separate sleep space (e.g. a cot or Moses basket) in the same room as their parent/carer. 🌸

  1. Lie your baby on their back.
  2. Keep their cot/moses basket clear.
  3. Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress.
  4. Keep baby's environmet smoke free
  5. Avoid your baby getting too hot.
  6. Sleep your baby in the same room as you for at least the first six months.

1 🌸

Screen Time.

Everyone is talking about it! It's for a very good reason. Blue screen time stimulates the brain, and this means your special little one is not ready to settle themselves into sleep, they are ready to "party".  🌸

Two hours before sleep there should be no screen time and that includes TV, games consules, mobile phones, tablets etc.  A very easy rule to follow is after they have eaten their evening meal, there is no screen time. Instead, focus on quieter brain activities such as puzzles, drawing, and talking about it together so they day is winding slowly down to a close. 🌸

For school age children sharing can be easier when you are doing an activity together and they are not looking directly at you, as they do not find it so challenged. Difficult topics can be discussed this way, as they may be at the route of sleep issues for older children.  🌸

2🌸

Look for the Sleep Clues.

There are some subtle cues to sleep that as parents it is easy to miss. When planning children's bedtimes we tend to fit them around routines that already exist and omit to look at little ones natural cues for bedtime. What to look for:

Slowing down and becoming slugish, stretching and yawning are all signs that natures natural sleep remedy "melatonin" is being produced by the body. This is a golden opportunity to get your little one ready for bed and into sleep. Times can be adjusted later, concentrate on getting the sleep sorted first.  🌸

3🌸

Is It the Right Time to Start Helping Your Child Into a Sleep Routine?

Just because it is the right time for you your child may not be ready. One thing at a time is best, so if you are already changing one thing such as toilet training this may not be a good time. Is your little one well? If they are not feeling well now is not the best time to start, wait a few extra days.  Other big life events such as grief, moving house a siblings birth are all times in a child's life that need time to adjust to before we start considering helping your child into their sleep routine. 🌸

4 🌸

Bedtime Routine.

Sit down and write out a realistic simple bedtime routine that is achievable. DO NOT SET YOURSELF UP TO FAIL. A simple example is below. It doesn't have to be extravagant, the simpler the better. Just make sure it works for you, you can make small changes as you go along.  🌸

4.30 tea

5.00 play

6.00 bath

6.20 story in bed

5🌸

Once you Start, Keep Going.

Consistency is the most important word when it comes to children and sleep. Just keep going. If you feel like you cannot go on, make sure you have support, and let them take over. If you have no support, take 5 minutes then go in with your shoulders back ready to face what is to come. Remember,we have all learn't how to get into sleep at some point, so our little one will learn too.  🌸
